Hello everyone! It's me, Chris21ce from Second Life. Today I will be teaching you to build in Second Life.
Some of you already may have noticed that other players can create items to sell (e.g houses). This is something that is very basic and easy to make using the shapes provided by Second Life's creation tools!
To start off, if you have the Second Life viewer software then you should be able to discover what areas you can build in by looking at the top of the screen for the word 'Build'.
Once you have found a place where you can build, open Second Life's creation window. you can then simply select a shape, hover your mouse over the ground and left-click on it to make the shape appear there.
Once you have placed the shape on the ground, you can make it larger by right-clicking on it, selecting the 'Edit' option from the circular menu that appears and then left-click on the 'Stretch' button.
Coloured boxes will then appear on your shape. By hovering the mouse over one of these boxes to highlight it and then holding down the left mouse button and moving the mouse, you can then stretch the shape in different directions.
Once you are happy with the height and know what you want to make (such as a house, for example), you will have the first wall! In your inventory, you should have some brick textures that are there by default in every Second Life account. Simply drag that onto the wall.
A house requires mainly 4 squares. I said above how to make the first wall, and it iis strongly advised that you keep the walls the same length or you may have problems!
To do this, edit the square that you made and re-sized earlier and hold down the Shift key and move the object (Wall) to where you want it to go. You will now notice that it has copied the object and you now have 2 walls. Keep doing this until you have 4 walls in the correct position!
That is the basic way of making a box-shape for a house, so you are almost done.
You may want to make one wall smaller so you can have a door! Remember that doors need to be scripted in order to be able to open and close. As for the windows, you can build a square and make it bigger and thinner and then edit it to make it transparent.
The roof can be built using any shape you like, really. Remember that this is your design - I am just trying to give you an idea on how you can do it. For example, you could use a triangle for the roof!
If you would like to make a house yourself then I do have a door script that you can have free of charge. Because my script is completed and works fine, the permissions given will be 'no modify' and 'no transfer'. This is so you cannot sell my script by copying it into a new script file.
A house in Second Life normally has decorations, including a bed. Beds in SL are often just rectangles with scripts and textures.
If you don't want to bother with making a bed, you can search bed in your inventory - there should be one stored in the Library folder of your Second Life inventory! I am not an expert at making beds so I won't go into detail, as I am sure you can find videos on how to make them!
Beds also may need animations incorporated into them. Animations let you sleep or lay; for example, if you have a bed then you may want to lay on it and not just sit on it! You can do this by getting an animation or what is known as a 'pose ball' from a store in-word or from the Second Life Marketplace.
I also have a 'lay' animation if anyone would like it, which I can provide free of charge with full permissions! Log into Second Life and Instant Message (IM) Chris21ce Resident for a copy.
Thats all I have to say today. Feel free to comment! See you next week, when I will be teaching you how to upload your objects to the Second Life Marketplace! :)
